Urban Knaves of Grain Calendar of Events


These are the events we've got planned as of August 27, 2010:

2010
Sept. 2 Wit Challenge, 7:00pm at John's Buffet in Winfield.  This summer's club project on the Witbier style culminates with a taste-off to choose the best wit.  Brewers should bring at least 3 bottles (or the equivalent in a PET bottle).  All brewers are invited to participate in the tasting, and the winner will be selected by popular acclaim.  No prize though--just bragging rights.
Sept. 11 No UKG Social Night this month.  UKG members are encouraged to attend the CBS Picnic (see below), and to bring homebrew.
CBS Picnic and War of Ribs, Chili, and Salsa, noon-6pm in the Cook County Forest Preserve, LeBagh Woods Grove #1 just off the Edens Expressway near Foster and Cicero Avenues; map here; detail map here (PDF).  Loads of craft and homebrewed beer.  Nonmembers are welcome.  Free for CBS members if bringing homebrew or a dish, $5 if empty-handed; $5 and $10 for nonmembers.
Sept. 14-18 5th annual Schooner Homebrew Championship, sponsored by the Belle City Homebrewers and Vintners, the Kenosha Bidal Society, and the Beer Barons of Milwaukee.  This competition is BJCP-sanctioned and draws about 500 entries.  It is held in conjunction with the Great Lakes Brew Fest in Racine, WI.  There will be four judging sessions: 
  • Tuesday 9/14, 6:00pm at the Masonic Lodge in Kenosha, WI
  • Thursday 9/16, 6:00pm at Northern Brewer in West Allis, WI (near Milwaukee)
  • Saturday 9/18, 8:00am at DP Wigley/Hop To It in Racine, WI
  • Best of Show judging Monday 9/20 at Rock Bottom in Milwaukee

The Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday sessions will have two flights each.  Judges who volunteer for at least two flights will get free entry to the Racine fest on Saturday.  Entry deadline is Sept. 4.  Contact Brian Joas to volunteer.

Sept. 16-18 Great American Beer Festival, Denver.
Sept. 30

UKG monthly meeting at at John's Buffet in Winfield.

7:00pm:  technical session.  Ed Seaman will discuss kegging:  basics, proper pressure, system balance, line lengths, etc.

8:00pm:  main meeting.

Oct. 9 10th annual UKG Fall Picnic (replacing Social Night), 2:00pm until late at Tom and Luann Fitzpatrick's, 581 Skyline Dr. in Batavia; map here.  We provide meat for the smoker; you provide side dishes and homebrew.  No set meal time; food is served all day long.  Bring your own lawn chairs, coolers, and soft drinks; also suits and towels if you plan to use the hot tub.  (Note:  despite what online maps and GPS might advise, you must approach from the south; Skyline Dr. is blocked north of the Fitzpatricks' house.)
Oct. 23 People's choice homebrew competition presented by the Homebrew Shop, 225 W. Main St. in St. Charles., 4:00 to 7:00pm.  No entry fee, just bring 6 bottles of the beer you're entering.  Judging will be done by everyone in attendance beginning at 4:30.  Pizza and announcement of winners at 6:00; you must be present to win.  Prizes are Homebrew Shop gift certificates up to $100. 
Oct. 28

8:00pm:  main meeting.

Oct. 30 19th annual CBS Spooky Brew Review homebrew competition.  Details TBA.
Nov. 13 UKG Social Night, location to be determined.
Nov. 18
Note date change due to Thanksgiving!

7:00pm:  technical session. 

8:00pm:  main meeting.  Club-Only Competition:  selection of the UKG entry for the AHA's Strong Ale competition.  BJCP 2008 styles:

  • 19a Old Ale
  • 19b English Barleywine
  • 19c American Barleywine

Bring one bottle to the monthly meeting, or drop it off beforehand at Brewers Coop or the Homebrew Shop. Judging will be conducted at the meeting. Have 2 more bottles ready in case you win!

UKG special monthly meeting and holiday party, 8:00pm at Lunar Brewing, 54 E. St. Charles Rd. in Villa Park; map here.  Our annual Christmas road trip once again visits one of the best and most unconventional brewpubs in the suburbs, which features unusual guest beers in addition to the house brews.  Lunar is located on the north side of St. Charles Rd., 3/4 mile west of Route 83.  Complementary pizza will be served.  Pay up your $12 dues for next year to be entered in a raffle for beery prizes.
