Urban Knaves of Grain Meetings

UKG monthly meetings are held on the last Thursday of every month at 8:00pm. (When the last Thursday of the month is a holiday, the meeting is moved to the Thursday before that.)

The place is John's Buffet, 27W482 Jewell Rd., Winfield, IL 60103. We meet in the dining room in the back of the old bar (the northwest corner of the building). It's most convenient to enter through the door on the west side (on Winfield Rd.) and turn left.

John's Buffet boasts two bars and an outdoor biergarten. The new bar has a full lunch and dinner menu. John has an outstanding selection of beers on tap--different ones in each bar--including Belgian, English, and German beers as well as American craft brews.

Our meetings start with brief announcements or discussion of club business. Sometimes we'll have a scheduled event, like a speaker, or a mini-competition. But most of the time the rest of the meeting is unstructured. We socialize, meet new friends and old ones, taste each other's latest brews, and trade advice.

Everyone, members or not, is welcome at our meetings. You don't have to be a homebrewer! Even if you're only thinking of brewing your first beer, stop by and let us help you get started.

There is only one VERY IMPORTANT rule: absolutely NO commercial beer may be brought to meetings. You can bring all the homebrew you want, but no commercial brews. Check out John's tap lineup instead.

Directions to John's Buffet:

From the East-West Tollway (I-88), Butterfield Rd., Roosevelt Rd., and points south: exit at Winfield Rd. and drive north. One mile after passing Roosevelt Rd., Winfield Rd. crosses the railroad tracks in downtown Winfield. John's Buffet is on the righthand corner, immediately after you cross the tracks.

From Route 59: exit at Roosevelt Rd. eastbound. Winfield Rd. is about 2 miles east; turn left and proceed 1 mile to John's.

From Route 53 or I-355: exit at Roosevelt Rd. westbound. Winfield Rd. is 5.5 miles west of Rt. 53 and 6.5 miles west of I-355; turn right and proceed 1 mile to John's.

From the North Ave, Army Trail Rd., and points north: turn south on County Farm Rd. in Carol Stream. After crossing Geneva Rd., go 1 mile farther south to Jewell Rd. and turn right. John's Buffet is 3/4 mile ahead on the on the righthand corner where Jewell meets Winfield Rd.

UKG Social Nights are held on the 2nd Saturday of every month at 7:30pm. The location changes from month to month and is announced on our calendar page and at the monthly meeting at John's Buffet. We look for brewpubs and draft beer bars with outstanding selections all around DuPage, eastern Kane, and western Cook counties. Occasionally we will substitute another event, such as a pub crawl, for Social Night.

UKG board meetings are held periodically, depending on the business at hand. Most often they're at John's Buffet an hour or so before the club meeting.  Board meetings are open to all members, but in order to help move things along so we can all go have a beer, we ask that non-board-members only attend if they have an issue to bring before the board.
